Description

The collection of documents compiled by Algimantas Katilius contains most of the surviving documents from the archive of the 1918 Act of Independence signatory, Kazimieras Steponas Šaulys, and is currently being preserved in the National Museum of Lithuania.

The most important document in this collection is the prelate's own autobiography, written in 1948 and published for the first time. His activities before the First World War are reflected in sermons from the first years of his priesthood and in letters written to Petras Būčys MIC, to the prelate Alexandras Dambrauskas (Adomas Jakštas) and to the Board of the Society of St. Casimir. Most of the documents relate to the period of emigration: diaries from 1944-1945, written during the retreat from Lithuania, correspondence with various persons, including Metropolitan Archbishop Juozapas Skvireckas, Bishop Pranciškus Petras Būčys MIC, Prelate Pranas Penkauskas, Bishop Vincentas Brizgys, Dr. Albertas Gerutis, Father Juozapas Čepukaitis, Prelate Mykolas Krupavičius. The documents relating to the beatification of Archbishop Jurgis Matulaitis MIC are highlighted separately: correspondence with the Postulator General of the Marian Congregation, Kazimieras Rėklaitis, and the memoirs of K. S. Šaulys regarding Archbishop Jurgis Matulaitis. The collection concludes with a memoir written to mark the 25th anniversary of the proclamation of Lithuania's independence and an interview with the "Voice of America". The book is illustrated with photographs held by the National Museum of Lithuania.

1918 m. Kazimieras Steponas Šaulys, a signatory of the Independence Act, was not only an important participant in Lithuanian political life but also the Vicar General of the Archbishop of Kaunas, a professor at Vytautas Magnus University, and a member of various societies. In the summer of 1944, he left Lithuania and settled in Switzerland, in the city of Lugano, in the guest house of the Brigitine monastery.
