The two-part publication of photographs and documents, Lithuanian National Revival and Education in Vilnius Region, presents a panorama of historical, political and cultural events related to our nation's struggle for an independent Lithuanian state and its capital Vilnius.
On the 16th of February 1918, the Council of Lithuania adopted a resolution declaring "the restoration of an independent Lithuanian state, organised on democratic foundations, with Vilnius as its capital". From the beginning of the century, Vilnius, the historic capital of Lithuania, became the centre of the Lithuanian social and political struggle for independence. The main principles that guided the Lithuanian intelligentsia in this struggle were to preserve their mother tongue and to educate the nation. This is evidenced not only by the press of the time, the memoirs of contemporaries, documents and posters of events, but also by historical photographs, which capture moments of Lithuanian cultural, political and social life, historical events and their participants, as well as educators, organisers of educational institutions in Vilnius, and images of grammar schools and schools. Many of the photographs were taken by Aleksandras Jurašaitis and his daughter Aleksandra Jurašaitytė.
