ISBN 978-609-478-066-0This book is the diary of the statesman, diplomat, publicist and collector Jurgis Šaulys. From a very young age, J. Šaulys was involved with issues concerning all Lithuanians , and later, with the affairs of state: in 1903-1904, he edited banned Lithuanian publications, drafted political documents during the First World War, took part in meetings with politicians from the German side that had occupied Lithuania, contributed to the drafting of the Act of Independence and signed it, and became Lithuania's first diplomat, representing the country in Germany, Switzerland, Italy, the Holy See, Austria, Hungary and Poland.
For 45 years (two thirds of his life), Šaulys kept a diary of his many daily activities, albeit intermittently, starting in June 1903 and ending on the last day of his life, October 1948. We have put the whole of the huge manuscript of 22 notebooks into one book. The National Museum of Lithuania, which holds it, is happy to share its valuable heritage and to give a voice to Šaulys, so that he can tell his story to all those interested in his life and work. The text of the book is best read without any additional information - it interweaves Lithuanian and world events with universal and relatable stories from his personal life.
