Description

The Lithuanian Folklore Theater, also known as the Klojimas Theater in Rumšiškės, emerged in the second half of the 20th century. Its inception dates back to 1968 when the theater began to function as the Ethnographic Ensemble attached to the State Youth Theater. Even then, its status as a unique phenomenon in Soviet Lithuanian culture became apparent. This ensemble promoted previously unheard ancient Lithuanian polyphonic songs (sutartinės) as well as folk folklore from the late 19th to the early 20th century. The ensemble's leader, musician Povilas Mataitis, and scenographer Dalia Mataitienė, in their quest for the roots of national history and ethno-culture, eventually established this ensemble as the Folklore Theater.

In the book, both creators of the Mataičiai Theater reflect on the path they have taken, its twists and turns, and recount the obstacles they had to overcome along their creative journey.

The texts in the publication are adorned with the works of well-known Lithuanian photographic artists. The book serves as a kind of encyclopedia of Lithuanian folklore. It bridges the present with the past, serving as a passage through which several generations of people transition.
