Description

The main focus of the study is the process of shaping St. George's Avenue in Vilnius. The researched material covers the period from the inception of the street's vision in 1817 to the situation that emerged along the avenue in 1875. The theme of vision and reality is the leitmotif of this book. The book consists of two main sections, which reflect the emergence of the vision of St. George's Avenue, the circumstances of project development, and its implementation in practice.
In a comprehensive study of the formation process of St. George's Avenue, the analysis of surviving 19th-century plans of Vilnius is particularly important. One of the goals of this work is not only to present the theoretical urbanistic and social context in detail but also to introduce into scholarly circulation a part of the collection of Vilnius city plans preserved in the Lithuanian National Museum, thereby supplementing the history of the city and its main streets with new facts.
