ISBN 978-609-478-080-6The catalogue of the exhibition "Unresolved Composition. World War II in Soviet Lithuanian Art" deconstructs the most famous works of Soviet Lithuanian art that embodied the propaganda narrative of the "Great Patriotic War".
The narrative of the "Great Patriotic War" became one of the tools of Soviet colonisation, and its visual consolidation was perceived as a necessary element of the legitimisation of the occupation and the sovietization of Lithuania. "Unresolved composition" was a favourite phrase of the Soviet art censors, which was used to criticise the artistic level of the work and the interpretation of the plot when it did not conform to the official ideological line. In the context of the exhibition, it refers to the complex vicissitudes of art life in occupied Lithuania, the distorted accents of the historical narrative during the Soviet era, and the conflicts of our memory that persist today.
The catalogue is published in Lithuanian and English. The catalogue was partly financed by the Lithuanian Council for Culture.
