In the 20th century, the most important goal of the Lithuanian nation, which had experienced several occupations, was to survive. The occupations were characterised not only by physical but also spiritual violence, especially the struggle against the history of Lithuania and the symbols of freedom and statehood. The falsification of history, the denigration of the Lithuanian people and the Lithuanian state, and the compromising of the very idea of statehood have affected the historical consciousness of our people, and therefore, Lithuania is constantly confronted with the problems of identity, historical memory and commemoration. We hope that this monograph, which evaluates historical decisions and events from the perspective of Lithuanian statehood, will help to understand and appreciate the efforts of the Seimas to defend the country's independence and consolidate statehood during the parliamentary period of the first Lithuanian Republic.
