Description
Jan Bułhak (1876–1950), the most prominent photographer of Vilnius landscapes in the first half of the 20th century, spent almost his entire adult life in this city. Settling here before the First World War, he worked as the city's photographer, bearing witness to and participating in its life – his camera captured historical and cultural events, photographed historical figures and ordinary residents of Vilnius, church and ethnographic festivals, and documented architectural landmarks.
The first book of the three-volume publication Vilnius of the National Museum of Lithuania is dedicated to the most important theme of J. Bułhak's work - immortalizing the old city. The photographs published in the book are a visual study of Vilnius architecture, revealing the photographer's ability to purposefully use natural light sources in evocative architectural compositions and, by combining the Vilnius landscape with architecture, create an image of a monumental historical city.
This publication of photographs by J. Bułhak is an impressive visual story created by the photographer about Vilnius, its artistic monuments, history and people, intended for anyone who wants to get to know the old city.
